Creatures, Insects and Bugs of Nature: Signs & Symbols

Creatures - Signs & Symbols

As the British weather improves and we start spending more time in our gardens and the great outdoors, we begin to notice the bugs and creepy crawlies that come with the season.

We might like some of these insects, such as bees for pollinating and butterflies for their beauty as they flutter around the garden. However, other creatures are commonly seen as pests and unwelcome companions to gardeners.

What you may not know or consider much is the symbolism behind these creatures. Some are linked to gods, spirits, and even the underworld!

Read on for more about these Creatures

Ants

Ants symbolise order, industriousness and fertility.

Bees

Bees are often associated with collaboration and diligence. The honey they produce signifies sweetness, while beeswax is used to make light (candles). Bees have also long been associated with deities and royalty.

Beetles

Beetles represent divine wisdom, immortality, and regeneration. They were important to the Ancient Egyptians, particularly the Scarab Beetle, which is aligned with the god of the rising Sun – Khepri.

Butterflies

Butterflies are known for their miraculous metamorphosis cycle. To many, this represents resurrection, transformation, the soul, happiness, and beauty.

Dragonflies

Dragonflies have long been associated with illusion and magic. They are considered an imperial emblem and an icon of joy.

Flies

Flies are disease carriers, so it’s no surprise they symbolise evil and corruption. However, for the American Indian Navajo, they are actually considered spirit messengers and are linked to healing!

Grasshopper

Grasshopper’s significance varies by country – in Ancient Greece, it symbolised nobility and abundance. In Asia, its sound represents Buddhist chanting, while in China, it is considered a symbol of good luck.

Ladybirds

Ladybirds are associated with good fortune, fertility and motherhood.

Locusts

Locusts likely evoke the Old Testament, where God sent a plague of locusts as punishment. It’s no wonder they symbolise indecision, destruction, calamity, and spiritual torment!

Moths

Moths’ erratic and nocturnal behaviours align with what they symbolise – rushing into doom, getting too close to the flame, and a lost soul seeking God.

Praying Mantis

Praying Mantis, the ‘Mantis’ part comes from a Greek word meaning ‘prophet,’ and they have long associated this creature with mystical powers. It is seen as cunning, courageous, and holy.

Scorpions

Scorpions are known for having a sting in their tail, so it is no surprise that this creature is recognised as a symbol of destruction and ultimately death.

Snails

Snails symbolise deliberate action and steadfastness, traits well-known to many gardeners! The spiral shell of the snail denotes infinity and a labyrinth.

Spiders

Spiders also have a dual meaning; to some, they symbolise good luck, diligence, wisdom, and being weavers of destiny. However, to others, they are seen as predators.

Worms

Worms can be associated with the creation of myths; in art, they often depict mortality. To many, they symbolise Earth, dissolution, and death.
